Summary
Floor Tile - Design 5 – Initials W and G tied together with a ribbon below a swagged canopy within an arch. There are quarter rosettes in the upper corners. Olive green glazed body with a light green /creamy yellow slip inlay. From a collection of designs of tiles commissioned for Lacock Abbey by William Sharington. Manufactured between 1550-3. Design 4 and 5 both have rosettes and form a simple pattern with each other matching up the half rosettes and do not seem to fit with the carpet pattern of the bulk of the Sharington tiles. (Group A – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). The tile has surface damage to the top and bottom edges, but much of the glaze and all the slip remains intact and the is in good overall condition. There are areas of dark red staining which has adhered to the slip.
Provenance
Purchased with the family collection of Abbey contents in situ from Mrs. Petronella Burnett-Brown, December 2009.
