Summary
Floor Tile Fragment - Design 4 - WS initials either side of a scorpion with dolphins below and half rosettes to the side. There is sunflower type foliage at the base below the dolphins. The scorpion is vey articulated with details of eyes and crease around the mouth. Olive green glazed body with a light green /creamy yellow slip inlay. From a collection of designs of tiles commissioned for Lacock Abbey by William Sharington. Manufactured between 1550-3. Design 4 and 5 both have rosettes and form a simple pattern with each other matching up the half rosettes. (Group A – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report).The tile is the lower section of the tile. There is glaze remaining on the lower and right edges of the tile. The slip is lost across most of the scorpion, dolphin and part of the S.
