Summary
Floor Tile - Design 3 - W S initials either side of a scorpion with dolphins below. Scorpion is very articulated, details of eyes and crease around mouth. Olive green glazed body with a light green/cream inlay. From a collection of tiles commissioned for Lacock Abbey by William Sharington. Manufactured between 1550-3. Part of a carpet with designs 1 (or 2), 6, 7, 8, 28 and 31 (Group A – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). The decorative surface of the tile is in very good overall condition, with only small areas of lost shine to the glaze. All the slip and original colour remains. However one side of the tile is chipped down one edge and the reverse is badly damaged, making the tile much thinner than usual on one side.
Provenance
Purchased with the family collection of Abbey contents in situ from Mrs. Petronella Burnett-Brown, December 2009.
