Summary
Floor Tile - Design 3 - W S initials either side of a scorpion with dolphins below. Scorpion is very articulated, details of eyes and crease around mouth. Olive green glazed body with a light green/cream inlay. From a collection of designs of tiles commissioned for Lacock Abbey by William Sharington. Manufactured between 1550-3. Part of a carpet with designs 1 (or 2), 6, 7, 8, 28 and 31 (Group A – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). The tile has almost all of the glaze remaining, in an unusually dark green colour. There is one small circular raised section that is slightly worn at the base of the scorpions tail.
