Summary
Complete Floor Tile - Design 2 - Sharington impaling Faringdon. Half chequerboard design and half three unicorns within a thick boarder. Olive green glazed body with a light yellow/cream inlay. From a collection of 10 designs of tiles commissioned for Lacock Abbey by William Sharington. Manufactured between 1550-3. Probably interchangeable in a carpet pattern with designs 3, 7, 8, 28 and 31 (Group A – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). All the glaze is gone, and the slip is badly worn away but the design is still distinguishable. The top edge is very badly damaged with depression.
Provenance
Purchased with the family collection of Abbey contents in situ, from Mrs. Petronella Burnett-Brown , December 2009
