Summary
Watercolour on ivory, Charles William Stewart Vane, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry, KG, GCB, GCH, PC, (1778-1854) (after Sir Thomas Lawrence) by Sir William John Newton (London 1785 – London 1869), 1818. A three-quarter-length portrait, in Hussars uniform with medals and decorations, holding a busby in his right hand, his left resting on the hilt of a sword. Three-colour gold frame attributed to A.J. Strachan chased and engraved with scrolling foliage and surmounted by gold and enamel marquess' coronet, the giltmetal strut back with inscription: To F' and dated 20th June 1818. With a signed handwritten note on folded paper "Hier Loom [?] Miniature of Charles William Vane 3rd Marquis of Londonderry by Sir Thomas Lawrence not to be exposed to the light -"
