Summary
The Richmond Cup, 1772: A George III silver-gilt two-handled cup and cover, mark of Daniel Smith and Robert Sharp, 1772, on spirally-fluted spreading circular foot, the lower body chased with acanthus foliage and with entwined serpent handles, the body applied with rosettes and drapery swags and beneath the lip with a band of anthemion and strapwork on a matted ground, the partly-fluted domed cover chased with a band of acanthus foliage and with winged figure finial holding a large shield inscribed 'TOWZER', supported by a kneeling putto who points at the inscription; the finial and the snake handles are not gilded, but remain silver. Engraved at the top rim of the cup, on one side: 'RICHMOND CUP 1772,' and on the other side: 'Sr JAMES PENNYMAN Bart SHELDON CRADDOCK Esqr STEWARDS' Makers' mark: Daniel Smith and Robert Sharp, 1772
