Summary
The Doncaster Cup: A George III silver-gilt vase-shaped cup and cover on fluted and beaded foot, the partly-fluted body with reeded bracket handles and applied in relief with a scene of artillery with horses pulling a gun wagon, the fluted spool-shaped cover with winged figure of Victory finial, holding a laurel wreath in her left hand and blowing a trumpet held in her right (the trumpet is missing), the body further applied with two oval cartouches, one of Bacchic putti, above which is the inscription: WON BY HAMBLETONIAN, the other cartouche is engraved with the inscription: DONCASTER CUP / 1796 / SIR HENRY VANE TEMPEST BART / and / SITWELL SITWELL ESQR / STEWARDS Inscribed on rim of foot: Rundell and Bridge Fecit.
