Summary
Oil painting on canvas, 'Full Cry' (The Four Sons of Baron Nathan Mayer de Rothschild following Hounds) by Sir Francis Grant PRA (Kilgraston 1803 - Melton Mowbray 1878), 1841. The four brothers depicted are the sons of Nathan Mayer de Rothschild, who had settled in England in 1798. In front is Nathaniel, following him and jumping a ditch is Baron Lionel; behind are Mayer and Anthony. The de Rothschild staghounds are seen in full cry in the Vale of Aylesbury, with Creslow Great Ground, then the largest unenclosed field inthe country, in the background. The pack was founded around 1840, with kennels at Mentmore. When twenty-five years later Leopold, the son of Baron Lionel, made Ascott his shootong-box, the houds were moved ther, remaining a pack until 1914.

Commissioned by Baron Lionel de Rothschild (in artist's sitter book under 1841: 'Full Cry'); given to the National Trust by Anthony de Rothschild (1887- 1961) with the house in 1949
