Summary

Sauceboat, one of a pair of oval double spouted sauceboats with entwinned handles, soft-paste porcelain, painted in colours with a twisted ribon on a lace ground in gold, above scattered roses. Made by the Sèvres porcelain factory, France,1774.

Full description

One of two Sèvres double-spouted sauceboats (saucières), painted in polychrome enamels and gold with a continuously twisted ribbon with flowers on a lacework ground (point d’Espagne), above a double blue line border, and scattered flowers, marked in blue enamel with the manufactory's interlaced ‘L’s , the date letter 'V' for 1774, painter’s mark 'Y' for Edmé-François Bouillat pére, and ‘Pe’ for Jean-Jacques Pierre le jeune. Part of a service ordered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a diplomatic gift, later exchanged and part sold in 1781 (see Longleat House). The saucières and other elements were then acquired by the Ministry of the Navy and Colonies and presented by Louis XVI to Tipu Sultan, Sultan of Mysore in 1788, and sent to Seringapatam. Purchased by Ralph Dutton in 1961 (Peters, 73-4).

Provenance

Part of a service ordered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a diplomatic gift, later exchanged with the manufactory in 1777 for a modern service. Part of the service was sold in 1781 (and now at Longleat House, Wiltshire), but the saucières and other elements excluded from the sale were subsequently acquired by the Ministry of the Navy and Colonies and presented by Louis XVI to Tipu Sultan, Sultan of Mysore in 1788, and taken back to Seringapatam. Probably brought back to Europe after the defeat of Tipu Sultan in 1799. They next appear in Sotheby’s, London, 3.11.1959, lot 17 (Peters 73-4). Purchased by Ralph Dutton in June 1961, ‘Sèvres sauce boats’ from Montague Marcussen Ltd., Antiques & Works of Art, 98 Crawford Street London, for £85.
