Summary
A Lyons hand-held stereoscope, with 3 coloured rotating filters, based on the patent of Joseph Lyons (29 September 1885). Black wooden body, engraved with leaf and scroll design on top and bottom surfaces. Hinged flap on top, with mirror inside flap. Ground glass screen at rear. Rack focusing of lenses. Each eyepiece has a brass attachment which rotates the red, green and blue circular glass filters behind the lenses.
Provenance
Part of the Fenton Collection. A gift from British Film Institute in 2017. From 1986-1999, part of BFI collection for the Museum of the Moving Image. BFI purchased collection in 1986 from James Fenton's Museum of Photography, Port Erin, Isle of Man 1976-1986.
