Summary
A Derby Doubler made by Platt Brothers and Co. Ltd., Oldham, in 1926. This is the third machine to process the raw cotton. The machine combines 96 cotton slivers (strands), by feeding them along a large metal 'table-top' and through a series of compressing rollers, and winding them around a central metal bar to create a lap (roll) of slivers.
Provenance
This derby doubler was originally used at Ilex Mill in Rawtenstall, Lancashire. It was bought by Quarry Bank Mill in 1980 and is still in working condition.
