Summary
A Platt Brothers ring spinning frame made by Howard and Bullough Ltd, Accrington, in 1958. This is the fifth and final machine to process the raw cotton into cotton yarn. The machine takes the bobbins of cotton roving (thin strands) from the top and combines two bobbins together through a set of drafting rollers and adds in the twist to turn the roving into yarn via a 'D' clip that spins on a ring around the bobbin that the yarn is wound onto. The carriage at the front travels up and down to wind the yarn evenly onto the new bobbin, and when full the bobbin is doffed (removed) from the machine.
Provenance
This ring spinning frame was a gift to Quarry Bank Mill from the Oldham Technical College in Oldham, Lancashire.
