Summary
A drawing frame made by Howard and Bullough Ltd, Accrington, in 1926. This is the second machine to process the raw cotton. The machine can combine up to 6 cotton slivers (strands), by drawing them out of tall leather cans and through a set of three drafting rollers, which align and draw out the fibres. Once drawn, the sliver is very fine so all strands are combined together into a new single sliver of cotton. This creates cotton fibres that can be more easily spun and are more consist, as it combines cotton from throughout the bale, ensuring the fibres are straightened and aligned.
Provenance
The draw frame was purchased from Mutual Mills in Heywood, Lancashire in 1977.
