Summary
A 17th century embroidered picture, the centre divided into two panels. The right shows Judith with the head of Holofernes, with rainbow and castle above and shepherd below. The left-hand panel shows Justice (?) with sun above and frog-pond below. This panel mostly incomplete. Surrounded by wide border of figures, animals, flowers and insects. In a moulded frame with deep gold concave border, glazed (frame; silver gilt).
Marks and inscriptions
The following is written on the paper backing of the picture, very faded and illegible in parts "Given by Ann Ades... to Dr S... as a token of respect and to keep in one original family in the same town - Sept 1747. Dr S was married in this year and same month, Sep 3rd, 1747." N.B. The family alluded to Madame Catherine Owens being her own work but unfinished dated 1637. The above is written on the wooden back.
