Summary
Oil painting on panel, Girl reading by the Shore by James Clarke Hook RA (London 1819 – Churt 1907)
Provenance
Peter Barkworth has written on back, Constable apparently admired Clarke Hook's work. I've always liked the Pre-Raphaelite girl with her chubby limbs. His 'Young Man Reading' is equally chubby. This was among my first paintings in oil. I bought it from Abbott and Holder, when they were in Hammersmith (Castlenau). Usually they had supplied me, on my regular Satureday visits, with water colours; bequeathed by Peter Barkworth (1929 - 2006)
