Caption
This panel was undoubtedly cut down and probably once formed the right-hand section of a diptych or triptych. The other section(s) would probably have shown his wife, and/or the Virgin. St. Christopher would have held a special significance for the donor. As patron Saint of travellers, it is possible that the donor was a merchant who travelled frequently, or maybe he just shared his name with the Saint. Isenbrandt was a significant art of the Northern Flemish Renaissance, although his works are notoriously difficult to attribute. He ran a large workshop which specialised in devotional images of this type.
