Summary
A square piano inscribed on the fascia batten Johannes Broadwood London Fecit 1774. The instrument probably by Frederick Beck, later inscribed, perhaps fraudulently. The mahogany case inlaid with decorative lines, resting on a reproduction trestle stand. Fitted with Zumpe’s first action (the ‘English single action’) with two handstops for divided damper sustain (divided at bb / b) and with evidence of a buff (‘harp’) stop, perhaps pedal-operated, now absent.
Provenance
Purchased by a private individual from the Broadwood Sotheby's sale in 1980 (Lot 295) for £750. Bequeathed to the National Trust in 1999.
