Summary
Piano, by Americus Backers, England, c. 1780-95. A grand piano fitted with a fascia board inscribed Americus Backers Londini Fecit (the board probably contemporary with, but not original to, the instrument). The instrument dating from between 1780 and 1795, but the soundboard and bridges are later. The case veneered with mahogany and inlaid with plain lines, resting on a later stand (possibly a post-WWII stand). The instrument retains its original ‘fallboard’, is fitted with the English grand action, has a keyboard compass of FF – f3 and two pedals, the right for the dampers and the left for una corda /due corde.
Provenance
Piano, by Americus Backers, late 18th century. Reputedly given by Dr and Mrs Fenn of Alston Court, Stoke by Nailand, Suffolk to George Henry Benton Fletcher (1866-1944), late in or after 1938. Described in Amateur Musician, 1939.
