Summary
Square piano, Christopher Ganer, England, late 18th century. A square piano inscribed on the fascia Christopher Ganer Musical Instrument Maker / No. 47 Broad Street, Golden Square. The case of mahogany with exotic timber crossbanding and plain inlaid lines, resting on its original ‘French frame’ stand with music shelf. Fitted with Zumpe’s first action (the ‘English single action’), with keyboard compass FF – f3 and later handstops for original(?) complete damper sustain and buff (‘harp’) stop. Furnished with a fitted lid prop-stick.
Provenance
Probably the piano acquired by George Henry Benton Fletcher (1866-1944) on 22 Jan 1943 for £3 15s 0. Transferred to the National Trust in 1944.
