Summary
Spinet, unattributed, England, 1700-50. A bentside spinet with a walnut-veneered case, inlaid with plain boxwood lines and resting on a later walnut stand. Unattributed, but probably English and dating from the first half of the 18th century (1742, inscribed on the g''' key lever, may refer to the date of manufacture). The instrument possesses a later soundboard and is furnished with two modern lid prop-sticks. Keyboard compass GG – g3.
Provenance
Spinet, 1742. Acquired by Major George Henry Benton Fletcher (1866-1940) between 1930 and 1937, and described in the Old Devonshire House catalogue 1938 and in Amateur Musician 1939. Transferred to the National Trust in February 1938.
