Summary
SPANISH CLOAK Part of a man’s suit, to include: a man's doublet, Spanish cloak, petticoat breeches, pair of gloves and sword belt (baldrick). Of figured cream and gold coloured silk lampas. Lined. The breeches, doublet and gloves trimmed with large bunches of ribbons. Almost circular, half length cloak of cream/gold coloured figured silk (matching the doublet and petticoat breeches) with a stand up collar with a plaited braided tubular cord loop and toggle fastening at the neckline. Lined with plain yellow/cream silk. Circa 1660’s
Provenance
Linked to a bill in the Verney family archive dated 18 May 1660 and thought to have been made for the wedding of Sir Edmund Verney (1636-88); by descent in the Verney family; accepted by HM Government in lieu of inheritance tax and allocated to the National Trust for display at Claydon House, 2005.
