Full description
Figure, 'Autumn' from The French Seasons series, small. Soft paste biscuit porcelain. A girl holds a basket brimming with grapes on one arm and a bunch of grapes in the other. The model was introduced between 1771-78. Note: The series is based on a set of eight figures representing the four seasons made at the porcelain factory at Tournai (Belgium) around 1758-64. The models were created by Nicholas-Joseph-François Gauron (fl.1753-88, born in Paris about 1736), a chief modeller at Tournai, who worked for Derby in 1770-4, but was based at Chelsea. They were indirectly based on a series by François Boucher, however, as no exact prototype has been identified, they probably derive from an engraved source. The earliest examples have mound bases, while later examples, as here, have the shallow cylinder bases. The series was immensely popular, confirmed by the many surviving examples.
