Figure, Earth from The Four Elements series. A gardener clad in a brimmed hat and contemporary dress removes a pot-plant from a plinth with his right hand and leans upon a spade, on an octagonal neo-classical plinth. The model introduced by 1771. Note: Based on Tournai (Belgium) originals of about 1760, modelled by the French or Swiss modeller Pierre Stephan. Stephan worked at Derby, certainly from 1770 until 1773, when he was paid £2.12s.6d per week. After leaving the factory he continued to supply models to the factory until 1778, and as late as 1795 he requested payment for moulds.
