Full description
Flintlock military musket, c1790 by Lambertus Michaelis Thone of Amsterdam. The escutcheon bears the crossed anchors mark of the Admiralty of Amsterdam, which was dissolved in 1795. A small engraved brass plate on the butt refers to the Battle of Camperdown in which the British fleet defeated the Dutch in 1797. Round iron barrel formed with a raised moulding at the breech, the muzzle with a bayonet lug. The breech is stamped with the Amsterdam City Control Mark. Retained to the stock by 3 brass barrel bands with spring retainers (1 band and spring retainer missing), the forward band incorporating a blade foresight and sling loop. The barrel bands also act as ramrod retainers. Ramrod missing. Length: 85cm. Calibre: 20mm Walnut full stock with a plain carved apron around the barrel tang. Brass furniture comprising; buttplate, escutcheon engraved with crossed anchors mark, sideplate with separate retaing screw, trigger guard with sling loop (missing). The right side of the butt is inset with a brass plate engraved in script; “Taken by Admiral Duncan, CAMPERDOWN 11th Oct 1797” Flintlock side-lock of rounded section with brass flashpan, based on the design of contemporary French military flintlocks. The flat plate signed THONE, AMSTERDAM. Cock with reinforced neck. The lock is retained to the stock by 2 sidenails. Overall length: 124cm
