Summary
[Saved] A Chinese export 'famille rose' circular plate with arms of Sir Richard Onslow (1654-1717). Porcelain, with enamelled border of flowers and leaves 'bianca sopra bianca' tinted pink though worn. The outer gilded border of trifoliate design, the inner gilded border of stylised lotus flowers connected by creeping stems and leaves. Decorated centrally with the arms of Sir Richard Onslow; 'argent a fess gules, between six Cornish choughs proper. Surmounted by an eagle preying on a partridge.' Sir Richard was ennobled in 1716, indicating that this plate, which does not include a the coronet of a Baron, pre-dates that event. The gilded trifoliate design can be seen on other Chinese export armorial services of similar date, such as the Burghley bowl and a plate in the Victoria and Albert Museum (C.376-1926).
Provenance
Purchased by the 6th Earl of Onslow; Accepted by the Treasury in lieu of Estate Duty on the death of the 5th and the 6th Earl in 1984
