Summary
Byzantine bucket found near the Sutton Hoo site which was probably made in the eastern Mediterranean region in the 6th century. Greek inscription.
Provenance
Fragments of a brass, Byzantine situla, the so-called ‘Bromeswell bucket’, probably made in the early 6th century in Antioch by an unknown creator. Used as a funerary vessel, late 6th century, and buried in what is now known as Garden Field at Sutton Hoo, Suffolk. The first recorded fragments were excavated November 1986, when the land was under the ownership and management of the Tranmer family. Further fragments were discovered under National Trust ownership of land in 2012 and 2024. These early fragments were lent to the National Trust by the Annie Tranmer Charitable Trust for many years and acquired by Gift to the National Trust in 2026.
