Summary
Marble chimneypiece, Entrance Hall, Mottistone Manor, c.1700-1750. A marble chimneypiece in grey and tan with bolection moulding. The centre plaque in white marble with a coronet and two intertwined letters 'M' with acanthus leaves around the border - the cypher of Baron Mottistone and added by John Seely c.1947. The fireplace was commissioned for Appuldurcombe House on the Isle of Wight, which was built in the early eighteenth-century to designs by the architect John James. It was badly damaged during the Second World War and abandoned. John Seely, 2nd Baron Mottistone, and Paul Paget purchased the fireplace from the house and installed it at Mottistone around 1947.

Commissioned for Appuldurcombe House, Isle of Wight. Purchased by John Seely, 2nd Baron Mottistone & Paul Paget around 1947. Bequeathed by John Seely, 2nd Baron Mottistone (1899 - 1963) to the National Trust, with Mottistone House and Estate.
