Full description
This mirror sits above the marble fire surround in the Entrance Hall of Mottistone Manor. The surround was acquired by Seely & Paget - the architect owners of the house - from the magnificent 18th century mansion, Appuldurcombe, in the 1940s. It is not known when or from where Seely & Paget acquired this mirror. When John Edward Bernard Seely, 2nd Baron Mottistone died in 1963, he bequeathed the mirror to his partner Paul Edward Paget (1901-1985) who then gave it to Evelyn, Lady Mottistone (d. 1976), in the hope that it might be kept at Mottistone Manor. It was acquired by purchase by the National Trust in 2021.
Provenance
Installed by John Edward Bernard Seely, 2nd Baron Mottistone (1899-1963) and bequeathed to Paul Edward Paget (1901-1985). Thence given to Evelyn, Lady Mottistone (d. 1976) and by descent. Acquired by purchase by the National Trust in 2021.
