Summary
An architectural drawing. Skidmore. Ground plan of service building, c.1674. The recto of this drawing shows the ground-plan for a plain rectangular building containing service rooms. The fact that there are windows on all four sides of the building and four different doorways indicateds that it had probably been a seperate service building without any connection to the house (perhaps Kitchen indicated as 'G' on # 14?). The verso shows the layout of the cellar under the new west wing. The three-flight main staircase is easy to recognise, but the location of the backstairs has changed. It now occupies the space of the Closet shown in Samwell's second design, on which W. Windham had indicated 'I like this very well / altering ye Closet & Stairs'. Recto: Pen and dark brown ink, some wash. Verso: Pencil, inscriptions in brown ink.
Provenance
Part of the Windham Collection. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust in 1969 by Robert Wyndham Ketton-Cremer (1906-1969)
