Summary
Bell by Thomas Gardiner of Norwich, 1756. Hung in a wooden turret with lead-covered ogee-shaped dome above the service wing at the east end of the house. Hung dead on an oak beam and used for the mid-18th century two-train clock by Thomas Page of Norwich. The bell (535mm or 21⅛” diameter) has a peg argent (an early instance) and mouldings 3:2-2:3:2. The full inscription is “THO = GARDINER * NORWICH * FECIT * 1756”. The bell weighs about 115kg (or 2¼ cwt). Its nominal frequency is 1384.5hz (i.e. note F(3) minus 15 cents).
Provenance
Made by Thomas Gardiner of Norwich in 1756, and used for the mid-18th century two-train clock by Thomas Page of Norwich. Part of the Windham Collection. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust in 1969 by Robert Wyndham Ketton-Cremer (1906-1969)
