Summary
Wall hangings in crimson worsted damask. Ordered in 1751. Fabric widths are approximately 54cm – which is the standard loom width of 21-22” for hand looms – and lengths are seamed together with very narrow seams. The damask has a leaf and floral motif. The design has approximately a 3 metre drop, only beginning the second repeat towards the lower part of the wall. It seems there could be variations in the length of the repeat – due to the method of manufacturing – which results in a slight offset of the design when it was seamed together.
Provenance
. Part of the Windham Collection. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust in 1969 by Robert Wyndham Ketton-Cremer (1906-1969)
