Caption

This group portrait shows Captain (later Vice-Admiral) William Lukin (Windam) (1768-1833) and his three brothers, Robert, George and John with the gamekeeper, Cawston, setting out with dogs from Felbrigg Parsonage. Captain Lukin stands in the centre and Robert gestures towards the tower of Felbrigg Church which can be seen in the distance. The brothers were the children of the Rev. George Lukin, the local rector who was the half-brother of William Windam (1750-1810) of Felbrigg Hall. William Lukin would eventually become his heir and take his name.

An oil painting on canvas; A Shooting Party of Captain William Lukin (1768 - 1833) and his Brothers at Felbrigg Parsonage, by William Redmore Bigg, RA (Felsted 1755 – London 1828) It is inscribed on the back: Painted by W R Bigg ARA/London 1803. It shows Vice Admiral William Lukin (Windham) and his three brothers with gamekeeper, Cawston, setting out with dogs from Felbrigg Parsonage, with the tower of Felbrigg Church to the left. It is inscribed on the back as painted by Bigg in 1803. Captain (later Vice-Admiral) Lukin stands in the centre, flanked by his brothers Robert and George. John, astride a horse, was later to marry John Sell Cotman and Ann Miles in Felbrigg Church.

Provenance

Part of the Windham Collection. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust in 1969 by Robert Wyndham Ketton-Cremer (1906-1969)
