Summary
Pastel, Sarah Hicks, Mrs William Windham (1710-1792) by Reverend James Wills (fl.1746 – London 1777). 1754. Half-length portrait of a woman, facing left, left profile, wearing a yellow dress, white ruffles and black lace around neck, hair falling to waist. Set in an oval within a rectangle. Signed either J.W. or I.W. 1754, l.l. . Sarah Hicks of Tanfield, Essex had been left a widow with three children by her first husband, Robert Lukin, of Dunmow in the same county, in 1744. Because of his father's disapproval, she was at first only William Windham II's mistress, but, after the death of the former in 1749 and her expectation of a child - the future William Windham III - they were married in 1750.
