Summary
A horse bell (bell terret). Small bronze bell and clapper suspended inside a brass circle with finial above and ferrules below and a screw base fitting. Used for heavy show horse decorations, usually mounted on the head harness and rump. One of the most popular decorations used with fly terrets- hanging brasses, and facepieces. Note: object previously known in the house as a coffin bell.
Provenance
Part of the Windham Collection. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust in 1969 by Robert Wyndham Ketton-Cremer (1906-1969)
