Summary
One of a pair of iron bracelets. Black decorative chain bracelet with large catch with figure in centre of buckle. With handwritten notes regarding their origin - 'Iron Bracelets - When Napoleon Bonaparte in 1807-9 endeavoured to crush the enemy, ladies gave their jewels for the defence of their country. A gun taken from the French was afterwards ordered by the King of Prussia, husband of the Queen Louisa, to be made into filigree ornaments and presented to the ladies who had given their jewels, with the motto 'For Gold I Give Iron'. With card 'Anna Bayly, Seven Trees, Plymouth'.
Provenance
Part of the Windham Collection. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust in 1969 by Robert Wyndham Ketton-Cremer (1906-1969)
