Summary
Print, engraving, Margaret Smith, Countess of Lucan (c.1740-1814) (after Robert William Satchwell after Angelica Kauffman RA) by Samuel Freeman (London 1773 - London 1857), published by Thomas Frognall Dibdin. Full-length portrait of a woman dressed in flowing pseudo-classical robes lounges on a low stool and looks to her left. On a classical sarcophagus with an urn she rests an open book of prints. A draped classical pillar stands to the right with sky in the background. Bottom of engraving removed and stuck to back of frame 'Lady Bingham. B. Clowes engraver, Gutter Lane, Cheapside, London. Published 1775 by James Watson, Little Queen Anne Street'. Inscribed in pencil on back of frame 'RWKC bought at Honingham Hall sale July 1936'. Black and gilt frame, glazed.
Provenance
Part of the Windham Collection. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust in 1969 by Robert Wyndham Ketton-Cremer ( 1906-1969).
