Full description
Flintlock rifle, India (Sind region) c1800. Octagonal iron barrel, slightly flared at the muzzle and rifled with 8 grooves. The breech formed with a raised flanged containing aperture and grooved sights. Blade fore-sight. Retained to the stock by 4 plain brass barrel bands. No provision for a ramrod. The metal rusted overall. Barrel length 113.5cm. Calibre 16mm. Wooden full stock with thin and deeply curving butt. Iron furniture comprising; ribbon-like trigger guard with decorative finial. Side-plate (missing). The forestock fitted with 2 iron sling swivels. Some splits and pieces of wood missing. The lock missing. The recess in the stock indicates that the lock would have been a flintlock. Overall length: 153.3cm.
Provenance
Part of the Windham Collection. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust in 1969 by Robert Wyndham Ketton-Cremer (1906-1969)
