Full description
Flintlock target rifle, c1800, with heavy rifled barrel. The overall design and characteristics of the stock and barrel belong to a known group of French target rifles dating as far back as the late 17th century. No identifiable markings on this gun have been found. Heavy octagonal iron barrel with 18-groove rifling. Aperture fore-sight, the rear sight missing. Retained to the stock by 3 barrel pins. No provision for a ramrod. Metal with surface rust and pitting. Barrel length 95.6cm. Calibre 19mm. Walnut full stock. The butt of heavy proportions with a flat underside and deep thumb recess formed behind the barrel tang. Carved apron to barrel tang and lock recess. The forestock with large bulbous grip on the underside and pierced with a large transverse iron pin. Iron furniture comprising; heavy flat butt-plate with fixing screws, trigger guard (missing – only fixing screws present). The butt broken through at the wrist and loosely held with a screw. Worm damage and wood missing around lock recess. The lock missing. The recess shape in the stock indicates that the lock would have been a flintlock. Overall length: 136cm.
