Summary
Oil painting on board, Sir Richard Charles Francis Christian Meade, 3rd Earl of Clanwilliam (1795-1879) by George Frederick Watts, OM, RA, (London 1817 - Compton 1904). In his youth he was a leading diplomat, serving with the Foreign Secretary, Lord Castlereagh, at the Congress of Vienna in 1814 to 1815 and then in the Foreign Office from 1817 to 1823. For the last 31 years of his life he was Captain of Deal Castle. He married Lady Elizabeth Herbert, daughter of the 11th Earl of Pembroke.
