Summary
Pastel on paper, Sarah Lethieullier, Lady Fetherstonhaugh (1722-1788) by William Hoare of Bath, RA (Eye 1707 – Bath 1792), 1753. A half-length portrait facing, in white lace cap, pink dress and black cloak. Sir Matthew Fetherstonhaugh visited Bath in 1753, when this and the companion painting of Sir Matthew, (NT/UPP/P/138a) were probably painted. She is in 'Tyrolean' costume, an imitation of the 'fancy' pastels of Rosalba Carriera, perhaps in anticipation of the Grand Tour about to take her across the Alps.Carved gilt frame.
