Summary
A Chippendale giltwood pier glass in the Chinese style yet markedly Rococo, it can be linked more closely to a design of C.1752 published by Matthias Lock, reprinted as plate 4 in the 1769 reissue of his 'A New Book of Ornaments for Looking Glass Frames'. With mirror patterned borders, the central glazing bar carved with two birds, the sides with trees in full relief with stalactites issuing from rockwork, the lower part with a balustrade and the arched cresting with an arbour, wave ornament and scrolling foliage surmounted by foliage and pagoda suspending three bells flanked by flowers. C.1755.
