Summary
A giltwood pier table, English, circa 1740, with a Siena violetto marble top above a waved frieze centred by a scrolling cartouche with a sunburst mask of Apollo, on cabriole legs carved with foliage and terminated in scroll feet. The overall shape of this table and the Apollo mask are reminiscent of William Kent designs while the foliate decoration can be associated to the emerging English rococo style. This pair of tables is thought to be one of Sir Matthew Fetherstonhaugh earliest furniture acquisitions.
Provenance
by descent; given to the National Trust in 1954 with the house and some of its contents by Admiral the Hon. Sir Herbert Meade-Fetherstonhaugh.
