Summary
A creamware veilleuse (food warmer) in three parts, with taperstick finial, modelled with masks. (Probably Derby, Cockpit Hill factory, c. 1775). See Harold Newman 'Veilleuses - a definitive review of Ceramic Food and Tea Warmers C18 and C19' (Yoseleff London 1967) - contains photo of identical Veilleuse dated 1770 to 1790. Uppark one mentioned in 1988 edition. There is an identical one in Science Museum. (Veiller - To keep a night vigil. For heating e.g. gruel or milk. Taper or candle on top, a small cup with oil in which wick floated (a godet). A candle would light this and then be placed beside. JE 1983).
