Summary
Dress remodelled from silk brocade of c.1740-50. Made in twelve main pieces, plus sleeves and insets. Full skirt, gathered into waistline with 5mm wide pleats. Pocket slits remain between fronts and second panels of skirt. Bodice made with an English back, coming to a point at centre back waist. Three-quarter length sleeves shaped to elbow (have been remodelled). Bodice front has been altered, and extra pieces of plain ribbed silk added to edges. Bodice lined with linen. Skirt hem faced with fine white silk. The brocade is similar to designs of the 1740s. This brocade has an off-white rib ground, with a woven satin stripe. The brocaded loose floral bouquets are large scale repeats roughly 355x455mm. Colours used include greens, yellow, pink, blue, salmon pink and purple (puce).
