Summary
Fan, the original leaf of vellum but refaced with silk and decorated with applied oval coloured paper mezzotint (of Apollo and Muse?) and two paper grisailles of Classical figures, both framed withy spangles, the reserves painted with flowers and neo-clasical motifs; the vellum reverse (originally plain) painted with floral sprays in oval and round frames; the original sticks (mature squelette a anglaise) and guards of foiled tortoiseshell. Note; tortoiseshell was very expensive, fan sticks frequently re-used; this fan updated from Rocco to Neo-classical style; painting fan leaves a fashionable occupation for ladies. 1760 (circa)
