Summary
A mid- to late 17th century walnut commode, or cassetone, circa 1670, North Italian, probably Lombardy. Four drawers standing on rectangular carved feet. The top surface has a crack one third of length towards the back. Carved frieze below top and side panels do not reflect the carving on the drawer fronts. Overall the construction is fairly crude and distressed. Repairs have been made to the inside of each drawer runner by adding thin strips of wood.
Provenance
Purchased from the estate of the late Lord Wraxall with the assistance of the NHMF and donations from members and supporters.
