Oil painting on canvas, Sir Nicholas Throckmorton (1515-1571), aged 49, British (English) School, 1564, inscribed across the top, either side of his head in gold: 'Sr NICHOLAS/THROKMORTON/ AN. AETATIS/ SVAE.49 A half-length portrait of Sir Nicholas Throckmorton, diplomat and statesman, in brown fur-edged robe and black cap. Chamberlain of the Exchequer and Ambassador in France and Scotland. 3rd son of Sir George Throckmorton. Father of Elizabeth who married Sir Walter Raleigh. He is holding paper in right hand and a book in left.

Verso: The linng of the canvas is cut away to reveal this insciption on the back of the original canvas: "On Sir Nicholas Throckmortons's monument in ...(St Catherine Cree, Leadenhall St.) is thus inscibed. Here lyeth the body of Sr Nicholas Throckmorton KT fourth son of S: George Throckmorton KT. Sir Nicholas was Chiefe Butler of Engalnd, one of the Cahmaberlaines of the Exch Ambassadour Leiger to the Queen Majesty Elizabeth in France ( 1560) in the beginning of her Reigh and after his return was ent Ambassadour into France once and into Scotland twice( 1565). He married Anne Carewe, daughter of Sir Nicholas Carewe Knt and begat her ten sons and three daughters. he dies the 12th day of February in the year of our Lord 1570, being of ther age of 57 years."
