Summary
Oil painting on panel, probably Anne Throckmorton, Mrs Ralph Sheldon (c.1540-1603), attributed to Hieronymus Custodis (fl.1589 -1593), inscribed: AETATIS SVAE 53/ Anno Dni.1590/ ANNE/ THROGMORTON. A painted oval half-length portrait, probably of Anne, daughter of Sir Robert Throckmorton (d.1580) and wife of Ralph Sheldon (1537-1613) of Beoley and Weston. She wears a black surcoat over a white blouse embroidered with black thistles, a high ruff and holds a thistle or fan in her right hand. Previously catalogued as Anne Carew, Lady Throckmorton (1520-1587).
Full description
This portrait was engraved by Thomas Trotter (1756-1803) in 1784, with the same inscriptions visible. A portrait of Ralph Sheldon attributed to Hieronymus Custodis was also completed c.1590 and has similar dimensions (Warwickshire Museum Service, 1989/99).
