Summary
A black and gold lacquer writing box, Chinese Export, early 19th century. The hinged lid centred by the Throckmorton arms, and lifting to reveal a fitted interior with large central compartment covered by hinged flaps with the Throckmorton elephant's head crest in the middle. Compartments for ink, pens, pencils. Decorated throughout with figures and landscapes. The ends with brass bale handles.

Purchased by National Trust in 2005 through private treaty sale.
